It is a matter of personal preference but traveling alone (I.e.; not with a friend or partner) gives you the most freedom and allows you to do what you want when you want. This means you decide what you do everyday and won’t need to compromise. However, traveling with someone is also fun and does save you money, especially if you chip in together and buy a car or van. The choice is yours but with over 300,000 backpackers traveling around backpacking Australia at any time, you’ll be hard pushed not to meet a like minded person.
