on Apr 3rd, 2009Conductive hearing loss a common condition in young children

There is one type of hearing loss that is common in young children, both because of their susceptibility to chronic ear infections and because a young child might put something harmful in their ear. As a parent, you should be aware of this. Called conductive hearing loss, it is generally only a temporary loss of hearing, and it is relieving to know that if treated quickly, most things that cause this type of hearing loss can be fixed, and the child’s hearing can be restored without the need of a hearing aid.

When someone is suffering from conductive hearing loss, sounds and voices will sound sound faint or distorted to them. An infant with hearing loss simply may not startle at a loud noise. One of the most common things that causes conductive hearing loss in your children is ear infections. This is very common, and is caused by fluid in the middle ear interfering with the ear’s ability to function. While this hearing loss is only temporary, it is important that these infections be treated quickly, because a temporary loss of hearing can impair your child’s normal development. Other things that can cause conductive hearing loss include damage to or scarring of the eardrum, sometimes by a foreign object, or the accumulation or ear wax. Sometimes, the child has actually lodged an object in their ear that has to be removed by a doctor. Finally, hearing loss can be caused by the three bones of the middle-ear becoming dislocated, or by abnormal growths of bone in the ear.
