by Dr. Randall Pruitt

Suffering from chronic low back pain? You definitely are not alone. And like most you have no doubt tried a variety of treatments.

The disc by far is the main cause of low back pain. Research has indicated that the majority of cases are attributed to disc pain. The second most common reason for back pain is facet joint pain followed by SI joint pain.

An important thing to understand about the disc is that it is only pain sensitive in the outer 1/3. This is important to understand because often damage can occur over time and you may never know, until the outer 1/3 of the disc is contacted by the inner material. This is why back pain can come on so suddenly out of the blue.

Another major issue about the disc is the fact that it doesn’t have a direct blood supply. It receives nutrition from the blood supply in the bones above and below. This is achieved through a pumping mechanism that creates a fluid exchange. Once the disc is damaged however, the disc loses it’s ability to maintain hydration and it becomes dry and brittle over time.

Recent research also show that once a disc becomes degenerative it’s lack of hydration actually allows an infiltration of pain sensitive nerves. So once the disc is painful, the entire disc becomes pain sensitive.

Spinal Decompression is the only treatment that actually increases hydration and nutrition into the disc so it can heal. This allows the disc to begin the regeneration process and it also allows the inhibition of the pain sensitive nerves to be restored so that the disc is no longer painful throughout.

Most people will compare simple traction to spinal decompression, however this is not accurate. True spinal decompression is achieved when the normal muscle guarding reflex is overcome to allow negative pressures to be created in the disc. Traction and inversion can’t achieve this.

The benefits of spinal decompression are very effective for disc health. First the negative pressure created helps to draw in any bulging or herniated material that my be compressing or irritating the nerves and secondly it actively creates a fluid exchange bringing in fresh oxygen and nutrition into the disc so it can heal.

Unlike most treatment that are primarily concerned with the symptoms spinal decompression actually deals with the primary source of the patients pain, which in most cases is the disc.

Spinal decompression can offer you a real solution to your pain, especially if you have tried other treatments that have failed. You need to look into it, if you are still suffering and would like a long term benefit.
