Designing Your Own Pearl Ring

Since jewelry was invented, melting down and redesigning jewelry has began as well. There are plenty of reasons to have jewelry redesigned. Maybe the Victorian pendant inherited from old Aunt Betty isnt your style, or perhaps Aunt Betty left it to you and your sister, so you split it to make two pieces of jewelry, or maybe your tastes just change. What you liked in 1985 might not be what you like now.

Pearls have been a classic for centuries, but the jewelry they are set in may not appeal to you now. But with just a single pearl, of any shape, you can commission a custom pearl ring.

Round

The perfectly spherical pearl is a classic, and its ideal shape should be the focal point of a pearl ring. Have a round pearl set in a ring with minimal prongs to hold it in. A popular design is a sort of Celtic knot band with the pearl inserted in the center of a knot. The prongs will hold in the pearl from the side so its roundness is still obvious.

Many contemporary designed rings can also show off the shape of a pearl. Set into a whiplash shape, the pearl is held in with a minimum of prongs and set off beautifully.

Baroque

Baroque pearls are freeform shapes. They can be slightly irregular, like an Idaho potato, or very irregular, like a splotch of ink. And this is where the jewelers artistry comes in. Since a baroque pear is, by definition, one of a kind, you and your jeweler will create a one of a kind pearl ring from such a gem.

The most popular baroque pearl ring style lacks prongs. Instead, thin pieces of metal wind around the gem like a rope, or twine around the edges just enough to secure the pearl.

If the pearl suits it, many people go the opposite way and pick a very modern understated pearl ring with only three or four prongs made just to fit in the contours of the gem.

Coin or Button

A coin pearl, perfectly round and generally two or more millimeters in depth, also makes a modern understatement. The most popular setting for a coin pearl ring is something like a horseshoe. Imagine a delicate horseshoe made of your favorite metal and the coin pearl spanning the opening. It is simple and modern. If you happen to have another, smaller, gem, you can also have it mounted on the coin pearl for another personal touch.
